Thought this would be a fun contribution while I wait for more storage. Basically the title. Feel free to share when you first heard of deepfakes, when you first saw one, where you got your start, etc. I'd like to read about how others got into this. I will start. P.S. this became a personal story mixed with a history lesson lol
The first time I heard of deepfakes was back in 2017? There was this youtuber that I'm embarrassed to admit I liked, but his name was Shane Dawson. He used to make these really cringey "conspiracy" videos that younger me ate up. In one of them, he discussed deepfakes with a doomsday mentality. There were other things he talked about, but they aren't worth a mention. The point is that I was interested enough to keep up with the news surrounding it. It been in the back of my mind growing up.
I looked them up a couple of years later on pornhub, it was 2019 and I know that because I was obsessed with Spiderman. A.k.a. Tom Holland. I did found a video on there, and then it got taken down soon after. So I tried to search for more gay ones on there, but then I found a video starring an underage guy who, at the time, was sorta popular? I don't know how he got popular, but I knew he was around my age which put me off from searching the genre for years until now.
Between 2020 to 2021, I found videos on YouTube of asmrists talking about their deepfake experiences. Specific to mention, I know, but that is because I believe I saw those videos before the viral Twitch incident. Involving that streamer who shown his viewers a deepfake site. I remember the videos made on that whole fiasco including the clip of that one girl crying because she was on there. I feel like I started to hear more about deepfakes after that.
Kpop stars, the fake with the Ukraine president telling his troops to back down, and celebrity scams? In that order? 2022 and 2023 are blurred together for me. Then Twitter made those deepfakes of Taylor Swift go viral in 2024 and I'm willing to bet that was when everyone learned what deepfakes are. Fun fact, the guy who tweeted those pictures is still active on Twitter. He's not on a new account, he's using the same handle. I don't know how considering the swifties.
In fall of last year I got the idea of making my own deepfakes. Specifically for men because there isn't a lot featuring them online. I wasn't going to follow through initially, but then new years happened with Grok and I decided why not? I didn't used the Grok tool though, I searched for the deepfake sites. I found this one after scrolling the search results for a while. I lurked for a bit to see if this place was legit, found another site linked to this one, and then made an account. And now I'm here.
This was longer then I intended, but I hope this was a fun read. Looking forward to reading all of your stories.
